Fairy tales are fantastical stories built from life events, dreams or cultural legends that are then embellished and condensed to create a tale that can be remembered and repeated. Rarely exists one true original fairy tale due to the years and years of recitation and oral tradition. Vladimir Propp believed that fairy tales were brought to life in different parts of the world simultaneously because we are all human no matter where we were born and the way we experience love, fear, angst and sadness is the same.

Fairy tales can be classified by characters, motifs, sequence of events and action. This classification was introduced by Antti Aarne, Stith Thompson and Hans-Jörg Uther.

Many fairy tales carry a coherent truth that is up to the interpretation of its reader. For example, a fairy tale may ignite an imaginative scene for a child while the same tale evokes a much deeper philosophical meaning for an adult. It is also necessary to mention the that fairy tales are not simply children’s stories – adults can prosper from reading these tales during their mature stages as well as their youth.

Fairy tales are also comprised of archetypes which create a concise expression that develop the motif of the tale. These archetypes include villains, heroes, helpers and more. In addition, within each archetype exist distinctions and journeys. For example, within the heroic archetype the character could be a lover like Prince Charming who goes on a quest for love to rescue the princess, or the hero could be a warrior like Odysseus who goes on an epic journey across the world.
